The Earth and Beyond

We have seasons because the earth is tilted. sometimes it is tilted towards the sun and at other times away from the sun.  When it is tilted towards the sun it is summer. when it is tilted away from the sun it is winter.

Half way between the longest day and shortest day are the equinoxes. This loosely translated from the Latin means equal night.

Lunar Eclipses

Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth gets in the way of the light from the sun falling on the moon. It only happens twice a year.

These videos give you more information about the sun, and other planets in the Solar System

1) Kids nine planets.

Nice and easy to start with. Very user friendly but you will probably need to look elsewhere as well.

2) Space kids

Another easy site with basic information.  You will need to look elsewhere to complete the booklet.

3) Astro central.

Easy to navigate.  lots of information in table form so easy to decipher.

4) The universe today

Lots of information and relatively easy to understand.  Don’t get side tracked

5) European space agency for Kids

Even more information. You might find this site useful for interesting facts. Scroll down to the bottom for links to the planets

6) Britannica Kids

The name say it all. lots of information and easy to find the right planet.

The pdf files her might also be of use.

Seasons

These 2 videos give some information about the sun. Although not strictly on the syllabus it will help you to understand the how the solar system goes.

Further out in space are other things such as nebulae

On 6th June 2012 there occurred a very rare astronomical phenomenon that will almost certainly not happen again in our lifetimes. It is the transit of Venus. This was used by astronomers over the last few centuries to work out how far away the sun is and the size of our solar system.  These two videos were produced by NASA.

The link below shows the comparitave size of some everyday objects as well as the extremes of the spectrum.  enjoy

Here is another link that has been recommended by a young man who has found this page very useful in an astronomy project.

He suggested that this site might be useful as well. Thank you.
